Adult-mediated connectivity and spatial population structure of sardine in the Bay of Biscay and Iberian coast ArchiMer
Silva, Alexandra; Garrido, Susana; Ibaibarriaga, Leire; Pawlowski, Lionel; Riveiro, Isabel; Marques, Vitor; Ramos, Fernando; Duhamel, Erwan; Iglesias, Magdalena; Bryere, Philippe; Mangin, Antoine; Citores, Leire; Carrera, Pablo; Uriarte, Andres.
This work investigated adult-mediated connectivity and spatial population structure of sardine in the European Atlantic waters. The spatial and temporal progress of cohorts was modelled using abundance-at-age survey data by area in the period 2000 to 2016, covering the region from the northern Bay of Biscay to the eastern Gulf of Cadiz. A novel methodology was used to calculate indices of cohort movement between areas. Movement was relatively low between three large regions, the Bay of Biscay, the northern Spanish and Portuguese waters and the Gulf of Cadiz, each hosting a recruitment hotspot. On the other hand, one half of the sardines recruited in North Portugal and a quarter of those recruited in Southwest Portugal moved to northern Spanish waters and...

Copernicus in situ TAC, BGC data, Recommendations for Production Centers and Data Providers ArchiMer
Jaccard, Pierre; Hjerman, D.; Norli, M.; Kaitala, Seppo; Mangin, Antoine.
This document conains recommendations for Copernicus Marine in situ Production Centers and Data Providers. Data provided to CMEMS (Copernicus Marine) must be provided in a way ensuring that their use in quality control but also for the community is obvious. While this is most often understood for physical parameters, it is not always the case for biogeochemical (BGC) data.

Estimation of the diffuse attenuation coefficient K-dPAR using MERIS and application to seabed habitat mapping ArchiMer
Saulquin, Bertrand; Hamdi, Anouar; Gohin, Francis; Populus, Jacques; Mangin, Antoine; D'Andon, Odile Fanton.
The availability of light in the water column and at the seabed determines the euphotic zone and constrains the type and the vertical distribution of algae species. Light attenuation is traditionally quantified as the diffuse attenuation coefficient of the downwelling spectral irradiance atwavelength 490 nm(Kd490) or the photosynthetically available radiation (KdPAR). Satellite observations provide global coverage of these parameters at high spatial and temporal resolution and several empirical and semi-analytical models are commonly used to derive Kd490 and KdPAR maps from ocean colour satellite sensors. Most of these existing empirical or semi-analytical models have been calibrated in open ocean waters and performwell in these regions, but tend to...

Optimisation de la surveillance des masses d’eau DCE en Méditerranée. Utilisation de produits dérivés d’images satellites en complément du réseau de mesures in-situ ArchiMer
Ganzin, Nicolas; Mangin, Antoine.
This study aims at showing the potential of « water colour » data derived from satellite imagery to optimise the monitoring of coastal waters within the WFD, with the French Mediterranean as a study area. The work is focused on one specific parameter, the surface chlorophyll-A (chl-a) concentration of which a monthly atlas for reference to “normal” values is provided, which consists of : (i) the monthly chl-a median computed from satellite data of 2003, 2004 and 2005 ; (ii) the integration in space of these values, represented by their average over the WFD water masses (except those of very small size) ; (iii) an indicator of the spatial variability of the chl-a through the spatial standard deviation within each water mass. Another important result is the...

Quality Control of Biogeochemical Measurements ArchiMer
Jaccard, Pierre; Hjemann, Dag Oystein; Ruohola, Jani; Ledang, Anna Birgitta; Marty, Sabine; Kristiansen, Trond; Kaitala, Seppo; Mangin, Antoine.
Previous versions of this document and up to version 2.5 were generated during MyOcean, MyOcean2 and MyOceanFO EU-projects. Starting in CMEMS, several updates have been performed but not officially released. Version 3.1 is the first official release within CMEMS with focus on chlorophyll-a fluorescence. The present Version 6 is the method used for the production of CMEMS INSITU_GLO_BGC_REP_OBSERVATIONS_013_046 release for the V4 of CMEMS in 2018.   This document presents quality assessment tools that can be applied as soon as data are delivered to the CMEMS production units, as well as reprocessing tools. The latter requires a certain knowledge about the type and structure of the data in order to build the control quality test. In addition, a set of tools...

ROSACE: A Proposed European Design for the Copernicus Ocean Colour System Vicarious Calibration Infrastructure ArchiMer
Antoine, David; Vellucci, Vincenzo; Banks, Andrew C.; Bardey, Philippe; Bretagnon, Marine; Bruniquel, Véronique; Deru, Alexis; Hembise Fanton D’andon, Odile; Lerebourg, Christophe; Mangin, Antoine; Crozel, Didier; Victori, Stéphane; Kalampokis, Alkiviadis; Karageorgis, Aristomenis P.; Petihakis, George; Psarra, Stella; Golbol, Melek; Leymarie, Edouard; Bialek, Agnieszka; Fox, Nigel; Hunt, Samuel; Kuusk, Joel; Laizans, Kaspars; Kanakidou, Maria.
The European Copernicus programme ensures long-term delivery of high-quality, global satellite ocean colour radiometry (OCR) observations from its Sentinel-3 (S3) satellite series carrying the ocean and land colour instrument (OLCI). In particular, the S3/OLCI provides marine water leaving reflectance and derived products to the Copernicus marine environment monitoring service, CMEMS, for which data quality is of paramount importance. This is why OCR system vicarious calibration (OC-SVC), which allows uncertainties of these products to stay within required specifications, is crucial. The European organisation for the exploitation of meteorological satellites (EUMETSAT) operates the S3/OLCI marine ground segment, and envisions having an SVC infrastructure...

Since 2012, an array of 105 Biogeochemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) floats has been deployed across the world's oceans to assist in filling observational gaps that are required for characterizing open-ocean environments. Profiles of biogeochemical (chlorophyll and dissolved organic matter) and optical (single-wavelength particulate optical backscattering, downward irradiance at three wavelengths, and photosynthetically available radiation) variables are collected in the upper 1000 m every 1 to 10 days. The database of 9837 vertical profiles collected up to January 2016 is presented and its spatial and temporal coverage is discussed. Each variable is quality controlled with specifically developed procedures and its time series is quality-assessed to identify issues...
